FOURTHINKING STEPS STUDENT IS RUNNER UP IN LEICESTERSHIRE
A Leicestershire consultancy is helping De Montfort University student Tony Wilkinson to make the most of his industrial placement year by giving him the chance to create a new web-based diary system.
FourThinking Consultancy Group, based on St Nicholas Circle in Leicester, took on Tony through the Shell Technology and Enterprise Programme (STEP), an initiative managed locally by Business Link for Leicestershire, which provides students with short work placements at the end of their second or third year at University.
Tony, who is studying multimedia computing, was given the initial task of creating a web-based diary system to show clients when the diary owner is available for meetings. Over eight weeks he developed a system using calendars from Microsoft Outlook, whereby clients can see when the owner is busy, out of office or provisionally booked for meetings. Appointment requests can then be sent via email.
Tony had to learn new programming languages to aid production and by the end of the placement, the diaries were up and running on the company's website, www.fourthinking.co.uk.
Following the successful completion of his placement, and the accompanying report and presentation, Tony was awarded second prize for his work and was asked to return to FourThinking to further develop the diary system.
This has included changing the appearance of the system and integrating it into the company's existing website style. He also created promotional material for the Web Diaries, including an online demo and business cards.
Janette Pallas, partner at FourThinking, said Tony had brought many benefits to the company. "We've all gained a lot from his fresh ideas", she added.
