NEWS RELEASE
SPALDING BUSINESSES CELEBRATE AWARDS SUCCESS
Celebrations continued into the night as three Spalding businesses marked their success at the Lincolnshire & Rutland Business Awards 2002.
Delivered by Business Link Lincolnshire & Rutland in association with the Lincolnshire Echo, the awards recognised the hard work and dedication of new and existing businesses in categories from e-business and export success.
Tina McEwen, chief executive of Business Link Lincolnshire & Rutland said, "These awards recognise the time and effort that goes into building a successful business. All the finalists have shown that they are committed to success and are willing to adapt and change in order to achieve that success."
More than 220 finalists and guests congratulated the winners of the South Holland District Council's Winning Business Award, Penman Clockcare. The company was started five years ago and won the South Holland Future Winning Business Award in 1999. Since then, expansion has led to diversification into design-led modern jewellery and watches and the production of high quality commissions to customers' own requirements.
Following the successful development of its web site the company is committed to e-business, with around 25 per cent of antique clock and watch sales coming off the internet.
Plantz and Potz took the South Holland Future Winning Business prize, which is awarded to original and innovative businesses that have been trading for up to two years. With the increasing popularity of programmes such as 'Ground Force', proprietor Peter Vickers saw the opportunity to develop a business offering off-the-peg gardening solutions with a personal touch.
He said, "People are caring as much for the appearance of their garden as they are for their home and the majority of these people want an 'instant' garden - plants in pots ready to go straight onto the patio." Based on the concept of niche retailing, Plantz and Potz provides a range of ready-planted outdoor pots, specimen plants for indoors and unusual architectural plants and topiary.
The Investors in People Award recognises outstanding business performance as a result of implementing the Investors in People principles. It was presented to Image International hair salon, who impressed judges with their plans for business and workforce development.
In addition to hands-on training for less experienced team members and the introduction of individual learning plans, a clear career path has been laid out for those who wish to progress further within the company. Existing team members who are ready to take on their own salon will be given the support to run a satellite salon in partnership with Image International.
The awards were sponsored by Alstom, the Learning & Skills Council Lincolnshire & Rutland, POWER, City of Lincoln Council, Chattertons Solicitors, Pannell Kerr Forster, UK online for business, NatWest, Lincoln Junior Chamber, Lincolnshire Development, West Lindsey District Council and South Holland District Council.
