Is it the big R or the small u?

Weakened by the insidious media outpour of grim economic news. Gunned down by the rat-tat-tat of your prospects telling you “no”. Deafened by the silence when you ask the world to take notice.

That’s what it feels like to be desperately sailing a start up business in the typhoon of recession. In the downturn of the early 1990s, I was there, living that nightmare, terrifyingly close to plunging forever into the abyss. I made a huge mistake then, one that took me years to realise. I hope my experience will help you.

Are you battered by the storm? Do you feel you’re about to sink with all hands? Perhaps you are even clinging to a life raft alone in the vast ocean of despair hoping against hope to be rescued. Every fibre of your being is telling you to seek shelter. Don’t listen.

This experience must make you stronger, not weaker. Resolve to think bigger, not smaller. Seeking security for your business is inventing a glass ceiling that will keep you from steaming through the calm seas ahead. Now, as we start to come out of the worst, is the time to get out there and sell yourself like never before. All the new business and sales work you’ve done that has given nothing back is actually a floating platform of awareness on which you can now build not just an escape route but a towering aircraft carrier of a business.

Don’t get fooled into thinking all your problems, now and in future, are caused by recession. That’s a trap that will make you think small, and the small “u” will keep you under for a lot longer than the big “R”.

Get your attitude and timing right, and you’ll come out the other side more than sailing, ready to fly.
